FAQ

An ecopod is a self-contained, sustainable living unit designed for use in off-grid or remote locations. The goal of an ecopod is to reduce the environmental impact of traditional housing and provide a high degree of self-sufficiency and independence to its occupants. Ecopods are typically compact and efficient, and are designed to have a low impact on the environment, making them a popular choice for those looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

At Constellations, we have decided to choose panelized modular construction made of BES (building envelope system) composed of EPS panels and Steel beams, as it can reduce the construction schedule by 20-50% and construction costs by 20 %, which makes it very advantageous. By using this construction method, we can reduce construction times while maintaining a high level of quality and energy performance.

By prefabricating building panels in the factory, we can use higher-quality building materials, reduce construction waste and increase labour efficiency. Modular building panels are also easier to install and transport, reducing labour costs.

Climate-resilient building envelope technology aims to improve the resistance of buildings to extreme weather conditions such as high heat, storms, floods and fires. The main objectives of this technology are to protect building occupants, maintain building functionality and reduce economic losses.

Constellations ecopods are prefabricated in our plant located in Lachute, Québec, which allows for efficient and eco-friendly production. The units are constructed off-site in a controlled environment, using sustainable materials and techniques to minimize waste and conserve resources. The prefabricated components are then transported to the final location and assembled on-site, reducing the time and resources needed for construction. The final product is a highly efficient and eco-friendly living unit, designed to minimize its impact on the environment and provide a comfortable and self-sufficient living space.
The time it takes to build an ecopod can vary depending on several factors, such as the size of the unit, the complexity of the design, and local regulations. However, prefabricated construction methods used by Constellations do significantly reduce the construction time compared to traditional building methods. Typically, the manufacturing of the prefabricated components of an ecopod can take several days to several weeks, depending on the size of the order and the production schedule. On-site assembly of the components can take several days, depending on the size of the unit and the complexity of the design.

The prices of our ecopods can range from $58,000 to $180,000 and above, depending on several factors such as the size of the unit, the level of customization, and the type of materials used. The base price for our Tenji starts at around $58,000, which can include the basic features and systems necessary for self-sufficient living.

For more information on ecopod pricing and customization options, you can contact our sales team. They will be happy to help you with any questions you may have and provide you with a cost estimate for an ecopod that suits your needs and budget.

Our ecopods can be installed in a wide range of locations, including remote and off-grid sites, such as forests, deserts, and rural areas. They can also be installed on private property, such as a backyard or a rural piece of land, as well as on commercial properties, such as campsites or retreat centres.

It is important to note that local building codes and regulations can vary depending on the location, and may impact the installation of an ecopod. Some regions may require permits and inspections, and may have specific requirements for waste disposal, water management, and other systems. As such, it’s important to consult with local authorities and professionals before installing an ecopod to ensure that it complies with local regulations.

Our ecopods and traditional tiny homes have many similarities, such as their compact size and efficient use of space. However, there are several key differences that set ecopods apart from traditional tiny homes:

  1. Self-sufficiency: Ecopods are designed to be highly self-sufficient, with systems for generating electricity. Traditional tiny homes may also have some of these systems, but ecopods are designed to be fully self-sufficient and off-grid.
  2. Sustainable materials: Our ecopods are constructed using sustainable materials, such as recycled or locally sourced materials, to reduce their environmental impact. Traditional tiny homes may also use sustainable materials, but ecopods place a greater emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
  3. Efficiency: Our ecopods are designed to be highly efficient, both in terms of energy and resource use, as well as space utilization. Traditional tiny homes may also be efficient, but ecopods take efficiency to a higher level, incorporating cutting-edge technology and design to maximize efficiency and minimize waste.

Purpose: Our ecopods are specifically designed for off-grid and remote living, with a focus on providing a comfortable, self-sufficient, and sustainable living space. Traditional tiny homes may also be used for off-grid living, but may also be used for other purposes, such as vacation homes or urban living.

Constellations offers three main heating options for their ecopods:

  • Propane Heater: Propane heaters are a popular choice for ecopods because they are efficient, reliable, and easily accessible. Propane heaters can be connected to a propane tank, which can be refilled as needed.
  • Electric Heater: Electric heaters are another option for heating your ecopod. These heaters are energy efficient and can be powered by the ecopod’s electrical system.
  • Wood Heater: For a more traditional and rustic heating option, Constellations Inc. offers wood heaters. These heaters burn wood to provide heat, and can be a great choice for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint and live more sustainably.

These heating options can be customized to meet the specific needs and preferences of each owner, and Constellations can help you choose the best option for your ecopod based on your climate and heating requirements.

Whether you need a septic tank for your ecopod depends on the local regulations and the availability of public sewage systems in your area. If public sewage systems are available, you may be able to connect your ecopod to the public sewer. However, if public sewage systems are not available or if you prefer to live off the grid, you may need to install a septic tank for your ecopod. If you’re not sure whether a septic tank is the right choice for you, it’s a good idea to consult with a local expert or a plumbing professional.

Constellations offers two options for toilets in their ecopods: composting toilets and propane toilets.

  • Composting toilets:  they use a natural process to break down human waste into compost. They do not require water or a connection to a sewer system, making them a sustainable and eco-friendly option for off-grid living.
  • Propane toilets: they use propane gas as a power source to heat and evaporate the waste, eliminating the need for a traditional sewer connection. Propane toilets are a convenient option for those who prefer a more traditional toilet experience.

Both options are available for ecopods, and the choice between the two will depend on personal preferences and the specific needs and requirements of each individual. Constellations can assist with making the best decision for each particular situation.

The installation of a wood-burning fireplace in our ecopods may depend on various factors such as local building codes and regulations, insurance requirements, and the specific design of the ecopod.

It is recommended to check with local authorities and insurance providers to determine if a wood-burning fireplace is allowed and what requirements must be met. Installing a wood-burning fireplace can potentially impact the overall safety and insurance coverage of the ecopod, so it is important to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to comply with local regulations and standards.

Constellations may be able to provide additional information and support, but ultimately, it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that all necessary approvals and permits are obtained before installing a wood-burning fireplace in their ecopod.

Ecopods from Constellations are designed to be off-grid, meaning they are self-sufficient and do not rely on connection to traditional utility grids for power, water, and waste management. This off-grid capability is achieved through a combination of features and technologies, such as:

  • Solar Power: The ecopod is equipped with a solar power system that generates electricity from the sun, reducing dependence on external energy sources.
  • Water Collection: An ecopod typically includes a rainwater collection system that harvests and stores water for use inside the unit.
  • Waste Management: An ecopod typically includes a composting toilet and/or septic system that allows for the safe and efficient management of waste on-site, without relying on connection to a municipal sewage system.
  • Energy Efficiency: The ecopod is designed to be highly energy-efficient, with features such as insulation, air sealing, and efficient appliances and lighting, which helps to reduce energy usage and conserve resources.

By combining these and other features, an ecopod from Constellations provides a high level of independence and self-sufficiency, allowing occupants to live off the grid and minimize their impact on the environment.

Constellations uses monocrystalline solar panels in their ecopod designs to provide efficient and reliable off-grid power. Monocrystalline solar panels are known for their high efficiency rates and longer lifespan compared to other types of solar panels. This allows for optimal performance and helps ensure that the ecopod’s power needs are met effectively and sustainably. Its average lifespan of 25 to 40 years is longer than other solar panels. The use of monocrystalline solar panels is part of Constellations’ commitment to building eco-friendly and sustainable tiny homes.

The ease of insuring an ecopod may vary depending on several factors, such as the location, type of insurance policy, and the insurer’s individual underwriting guidelines. It’s recommended to consult with insurance providers and discuss your specific ecopod and situation to determine if it’s eligible for insurance coverage and what options are available.

Constellation’s policy on deposits for ordering an Ecopod is not publicly disclosed. It is recommended to contact Constellations directly for more information on the deposit process for ordering an Ecopod.
