OUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO 3D-PRINTED HOMES
A new chapter in research and development is taking shape at Constellations!
During our visit to Batimatech, we had the pleasure of meeting David Laliberté and Nicholas Joyal, two passionate innovators involved in an exceptional research initiative: RI³D-FRQ, the Innovative Research Group for Sustainable 3D-Printed Buildings.
This research consortium brings together colleges, universities, research centres and industry partners with a shared ambition: rethinking the way we build through 3D concrete printing.
We are thrilled to announce our intention to join this research initiative and contribute to the development of a new generation of 3D-printed prefabricated homes.
SMARTFAB represents our unique approach to innovation.
Since the beginning, research, experimentation and prefabrication have been at the heart of Constellations.
Over the years, we have explored a wide range of construction methods, including timber framing, prefabricated panels, structural insulated panels (SIPs), hemp-based systems, rock wool panels and many others.
We have also developed distinctive architectural projects, including our exploration of triangular structures and the CODJUK concept, which remains a unique achievement in Québec.
Our commitment to sustainable innovation has been supported by initiatives such as Écoleader, along with additional funding awarded to help develop greener construction practices.
Today, we are taking another step forward.
Our goal is to develop our first 3D-printed prototype home in Québec within the next year, based on the architectural concept we are unveiling today.
Inspired by nature, this unique ovoid-shaped home explores a different way of experiencing space and architecture.
An original Constellations design, with an ambitious target for its first realization in fall 2027.
But our vision goes further.
We also aim to explore the development of a first community of 22 to 26 homes, built around this architectural concept and combining prefabrication, manufacturing integration and construction delivered in collaboration with a licensed general contractor holding the required RBQ licences and GCR accreditation.
This is where SMARTFAB comes to life: bringing together architectural design, research, manufacturing partners, engineers and builders to transform innovation into practical, scalable construction solutions.
Of course, innovation comes with challenges and risks.
Materials will need to be tested, structural performance validated, manufacturing processes developed and regulatory requirements addressed. Engineers, researchers and industry partners will all play essential roles in bringing this vision to life.
It is a collaborative journey built on research, experimentation and determination.
For Constellations, this is not really a pivot. It is a continuation of what has always driven us: imagining differently, manufacturing intelligently and pushing the boundaries of construction.
Through SMARTFAB, our ambition is to contribute to the evolution of how homes are designed, manufactured and built in Québec.
We are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter and share our first architectural concept with you.
